About the Instructor
Theo Poulos has been a chess teacher since 2007. A lifelong enthusiast of the game, he strongly believes in the importance of scholastic chess instruction to help students develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills. He is a United States Chess Federation Certified Chess Coach and former tournament player. Prior to chess education, Mr. Poulos was an English and Language Arts teacher. He has combined his professional training as a teacher with his understanding of chess to produce a cutting edge chess curriculum.
Mr. Poulos' innovative method of teaching chess is based on a finely tuned curriculum. Every lesson has an objective which features step by step instruction of chess principles, tactics, and strategies. Each acquired skill builds on the previous one allowing students to reach discernible benchmarks of chess understanding. In addition to the formal instruction, every class allows students the opportunity to put theory into practice by playing matches with their peers. Students with no prior chess background will quickly learn the rules of the game; intermediate students will increase their understanding of chess tactics; and advanced students will study the games of the great chess masters.
