2023 Camp Classes – For Student Entering Grades 4th to 5th

Choice is an essential ingredient in our approach, which is why we provide a wide variety of classes and programs to choose from. Our innovative offerings include art, STEM, MakerSpace, world languages, academics enrichment, outdoor and urban adventures, cooking, sports, and many more specialty offerings.

Programs reflect our focus on innovative and immersive experiences. Our outstanding team of teachers and counselors help provide an environment where every camper feels free to be themselves, where creativity is allowed to flourish, and where the focus is on friendships and play. Most of all, Summer at MPA is a welcoming place where campers feel known.

Session 1

Session 1: June 26th to July 7th
Students have a choice of various activities per time block. During registrations, you will be asked to select one per block to create the daily camp schedule. Classes are Monday through Friday. Don’t select the same class twice, as some classes are offered multiple times to allow flexibility for families.  The descriptions are below.

Block 1: 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Nature Walk / Field Trips
Embark on a morning of fun discovering the nature around you. IMPORTANT, you must signup for both period 1 and period 2. This a full morning class.  “Nature Walk” is a summer camp class for elementary school students that focuses on exploring the great outdoors. During the class, students will take a guided hike through a local nature reserve or park, learning about the plants and animals that call it home. Along the way, they will participate in fun and interactive activities such as bird watching, tree identification, and collecting. The class will also include art projects and a journaling component where students can record their observations and reflections on the natural world around them. The goal of the class is to foster a love and appreciation for nature, as well as to teach students about the importance of conservation and protecting our environment.

Art Lab
From drawing to clay molding and painting, the Art Lab Camp will allow campers to explore their favorite artistic medium. The environment is stimulating, and relaxed, and ensures that children of all ages and abilities are totally free to express themselves in a wide variety of mediums. Through small group lessons and personalized mentoring, campers will create using various techniques and mediums so that their imagination comes to life! There is a $25 material fee. 

Cartoon Animation
Learn how to produce animated cartoons and movies using the same processes as animators at Pixar, Cartoon Network, and Disney do. Create drawings and bring them to life, using production techniques such as timelines and keyframes. Work as part of a team and make friends who share your interests as you explore other animation techniques like claymation and humanimation.

Robotics: LEGO MINDSTORM EV3
LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education EV3 and the new EV3 Challenge! Students build robots that can use sensors to find lines, identify threats and targets, and then integrate programming with motors, sounds, and other outputs to move, react and solve challenges. Students will work as scientists and engineers as they progress through missions and projects that put their creative problem-solving skills to the test!

Math Enrichment
Students will brush up on key skills and concepts that carry across the elementary-middle grades, and will help them with feeling confident going into their next school year! Working on essential skills and concepts daily to minimize that classic summer learning loss. This session will provide fun, creative, and engaging activities to assist in student understanding of key concepts that overlap in grades 4-5. In math, the four operations, word problems, fractions, and individualized work take the center focus. Games, songs, and much more will help concepts remain fresh in their minds over the summer, and students will feel more confident going into their upcoming academic year! Our individualized approach helps students reinforce areas that need improvement while sharpening and looking ahead at the next skill to learn. Small class sizes will foster a close relationship between students and teachers.

MythBusters: Put Science to the Test
Does a porcupine “shoot” its quills? Are bats actually blind? Is there a dark side to the moon? Use scientific investigation, exploration, crafts, and games to determine if a variety of scientific phenomena can be verified or busted. Bring your own questions and design experiments to help you figure out the world around you. There is a $25 material fee. 

Block 2: 10:05 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

This a full morning class.  “Nature Walk” is a summer camp class for elementary school students that focuses on exploring the great outdoors. During the class, students will take a guided hike through a local nature reserve or park, learning about the plants and animals that call it home. Along the way, they will participate in fun and interactive activities such as bird watching, tree identification, and collecting. The class will also include art projects and a journaling component where students can record their observations and reflections on the natural world around them. The goal of the class is to foster a love and appreciation for nature, as well as to teach students about the importance of conservation and protecting our environment.

Painting and Drawing
This drawing and painting will introduce students to traditional techniques of observation and representation of the expressive realms of non-objective abstraction. This class examines the different modes of art-making that define drawing and painting as contemporary practice. Total beginners, casual novices, or advanced students will learn and further their skill set in a wonderful and creative environment. There is a $25 material fee. 

iPad Video Making: The Art of iMovie
Students will develop story ideas with small production teams, practice shooting and editing techniques to create a cohesive narrative, and apply the design thinking process: from iterating on their projects to offering peer critiques. Students will learn the three stages of film production, storytelling techniques on-camera acting; techniques; Camera/iPad shooting techniques; editing in iMovie Students will create: Silent Film; Super Hero Film; Fairy Tale Film; Fable Story. From pre-production storyboarding and scriptwriting to filming, all the way through post-production editing, the students are sure to make great friendships and great films all while sharpening their skills!

Slime, Slime, Slime
Chances are you have made slime but what about crunchy slime, bendable slime, fluffy slime, or blowing bubbles with slime? If you want to explore all the different kinds of slime this summer, then you will enjoy this class where the crazier the slime, the better! Campers will look at the science of slime and how to alter its makeup. Share what you know and learn from fellow slimmer. There is a $25 material fee. 

Star Wars Camp
Are you ready to set out on the biggest adventure ever experienced in a galaxy far, far away? The Republic, Clones, Trade Federation, and Outer Rim Planets are on the verge of war, and there have been rumors of the Sith making a comeback. Join forces with the universe’s greatest heroes to defeat the worst evil ever seen. These two weeks will test you while instructing you in the ways and honor of the Jedi. Embrace your courage and get ready to merge with the Force! There is a $25 material fee. 

PE Olympics
“PE Olympics” is an action-packed and challenging summer camp class for elementary school students. In this class, students will participate in a variety of physical activities, games, and challenges inspired by the Olympic Games. They will learn the importance of physical fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship as they compete in friendly competitions, both in teams and individually. The class will be taught by a experienced and enthusiastic physical education instructor who will guide the students through the process of learning the different sports and activities.

Block 3: 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Cooking and Baking with Ms. Oberg
Get ready to whip up some delicious treats in Ms. Oberg’s Cooking and Baking class! Designed for elementary school students, this summer camp class will introduce young chefs to the joys of cooking and baking. Throughout the week, students will learn about kitchen safety, measuring ingredients, and different cooking techniques. They will also have the opportunity to get hands-on experience with various kitchen tools and appliances, such as mixers and ovens. Each day, Ms. Oberg will lead the class in creating a different recipe, including classic dishes like chocolate chip cookies and pizzas, as well as more advanced creations. Students will learn how to follow recipes, make substitutions, and make adjustments to suit their own tastes. In addition to learning how to cook and bake, students will also learn about nutrition and food science. They will learn how to read labels, understand ingredient lists, and make healthy choices when it comes to cooking and baking. This class is a great opportunity for students to learn new skills, explore their creativity, and have fun in the kitchen. Sign up now to join Ms. Oberg in the kitchen for a week of delicious fun! Pottery Creations
Get ready to get your hands and your clothes dirty!! Pottery classes are a great way to introduce art to your child. Clay is an infinitely versatile medium that allows your child to explore their creativity and expand their skills. In this class, students will become familiar with several clay techniques, which will include, but are not limited to, Pinch, Coil & Slab, and Mold techniques. Make sure to wear casual clothes that can get a little muddy! There is a $25 additional material cost. There is a $25 material fee. 

Fun Board and Card Games
The title says it all! Come together to play some of old classics and some new board games as well. Enjoy fun camaraderie with your fellow campers. Games include: Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza card game, Taco V Burrito, UNO, Headbandz, Trouble, Mousetrap, Battleship, Chutes and Ladders, Candyland, Bingo, and more! The class will also include lessons on how to play in a fair and competitive manner and how to be a good sport. In addition, students will develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills as they learn to play these games. This class is perfect for students who love games and want to learn and play new games with their peers.

Games and Video Games
In MPA’s Games and Video Games Day class, Campers rotate between playing fun age-appropriate video games and playing fun, active games. Video games include Super Smash Bros, Splatoon, Mario Karts, Super Mario Odyssey, Pokemon Sword, Super Mario Maker 2, and more!

I Got Slimed!
Do you have a passion for Slime? Well join us for Slime Week for a summer you won’t forget! Prepare to get messy, while becoming a slime expert. And remember-not all slime is created equal! There is a $25 material fee. 

Sports Camp Baseball
The MPA Baseball Camp is a great place for any young baseball player looking to improve his/her skills, work hard, make new friends, and have fun. Campers will be placed into age-appropriate groups and will work on all facets of the game, including hitting, fielding, base-running, and pitching. Detailed instructions will be provided in all aspects of the game. The Academy offers players a well-maintained field and two indoor hitting cages.

Block 4: 1:35 p.m. to 3 p.m

iPad App Library
Students will be challenged each day to use different educational iPad apps and discover various topics. This class is perfect for students who are interested in technology and want to learn how to use the iPad to create and share their ideas. From star gazing to drawing, the fun is limitless!

Arts and Crafts: Melty Beads, Jewelry, Cricut Art, and More
For the tinkerers who love to create wonderful objects! Making a bracelet or necklace with simple beads and embroidery floss is the first step, but it doesn’t take long to expand their bead choice to include letters, specialty shape beads, or even a special pendant to use as a centerpiece for the necklace. Or experiment with Melty Beads and create beautiful patterns and art pieces. Get more complex patterns or create a melty beads basket. The creative possibilities are infinite! Or create magic wands or swords using the various tools available in the Thrall Family MakerSpace. Whatever you are building, our instructors are happy to show you new, more challenging techniques. There is a $25 material fee.

This session will provide fun, creative, and engaging activities to assist in student understanding of key concepts that overlap in grades 4-5 and cover reading and writing, and focus on reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and written expression. Students will brush up on key skills and concepts that carry across the middle-elementary grades, which will help them feel confident going into their next school year and minimize that classic summer learning loss. Students work with various genres, learn new reading strategies, strengthen their understanding of the parts of speech, and practice grammatical conventions. Games, songs, and much more will help concepts remain fresh in their minds over the summer. Our individualized approach helps students reinforce areas that need improvement while sharpening and looking ahead to the next skill to learn. Small class sizes will foster a close relationship between students and teachers.

Minecraft Modding
Discover the wonders of playing Minecraft using various mods. In this course, students will be introduced to mods, and understand how they work and how they can be installed. Students will modify blocks, items, weapons, biomes, dimensions, and mobs with new textures and learn to create their own characters. From Pokemon mod to superhero mod, campers will experience Minecraft in a completely different way.

Lego Master Builder
Love LEGO? Do you watch the LEGO Masters’ show? Want to build all sorts of cool and unique creations while also practicing STEAM skills? This is the club for you! In this club, you will: Build a specific creation from a “mystery box” of themes (sports, buildings, mazes, etc.); Talk about the LEGO show and favorite things to build; Use your CREATIVITY and IMAGINATION.

Zombie Science
Welcome to Zombie Science! This summer camp class is designed for elementary school students who have a passion for science and a love for all things zombie. In this fun and hands-on class, students will learn biology and perform the scientific method through a variety of engaging activities. From dissecting a sheep’s brain to creating zombie blood, students will learn about the biology of the human body, with a fun zombie twist. There is a $25 material fee. 

Engineering: Building Contraptions
In this fun and hands-on summer camp class, students will learn about the basics of engineering and problem-solving as they design, build, and test their own contraptions. Utilizing the Glowforge laser printer, and other materials such as cardboard and paper, campers will work in teams to create structures, machines, and other inventions that can move, spin, or perform other functions. Through this class, students will develop creativity, critical thinking, and teamwork skills while having fun and learning about the exciting world of engineering. There is a $25 material fee. 

Yoga with Ms. Allie
Summer Yoga sessions include an hour-long yoga practice accompanied by thirty minutes of mindfulness activities. Our kid yoga classes are not only fun, but also provide children with important tools they can carry with them including increased body awareness, strength and flexibility, and self-calming/emotional regulation skills (via breathing and relaxation exercises).

Join the energetic and fun Ms. Allie in the kitchen to learn the basics of baking while getting to eat your projects! This class is beginner-friendly and will help students grasp the foundation of how their favorite treats are made so that they can continue to make their own. There is a $25 material fee. 

Secret Agents
Calling all secret agents! This next class is full of twists, turns, and adventures. Using our knowledge of history, decoding skills, and research processes, students will take on undercover adventures all over our historic campus. Join us as we learn about the beautiful Morgan Park Academy campus in a hands-on, fast-paced, scavenger hunt-based course.

Card Board Challenge
Welcome to the Card Board Challenge Summer Camp! This exciting camp is designed for elementary school students who are looking for a fun and creative way to spend their summer. Our campers will have the opportunity to work with a variety of materials to create unique and innovative projects. Campers will engage in a variety of activities and challenges that will help them develop their problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork skills. They will work in small groups to complete a series of challenges that will test their creativity, ingenuity, and perseverance. By the end of the camp, campers will have developed a greater understanding of the many uses of cardboard and the importance of recycling and repurposing materials. History of Sports
When was the first baseball game? Where did football originate? Were soccer balls used for basketball games? In this course, students will learn about the history of sports, where and how each one was created and will get the chance to experience actually playing them how they originally were played!

Minecraft Architecture
Delve into the world of Architecture and learn what it means to think like an architect while you explore the principles of building design. During this course, you’ll learn how to combine different materials, colors, and shapes to create stunning buildings; use floor plans and blueprints to map the interior and exterior of your structures; create your own Minecraft architecture firm to show off your personal flair; design projects based on clients’ needs and make changes until they are happy with your work.

Sports Camp Basketball
Want to really excel at basketball? We have just the basketball camp or program to help you transform your game. We strive to cover basketball fundamentals and team-oriented play while creating a positive atmosphere where boys and girls will learn and have fun. Our skilled coaches work with each athlete to develop the skills of passing, posting, and scoring in the paint, offensive and defensive rebounding, blocking-out, fast-break outlet passing, using screens, and shooting. In addition, players will work on how to get open, footwork, triple-threat position, one-on-one moves, ball-handling, and passing skills. Athletes who attend this camp will leave the camp with a better understanding of the game and the individual requirements of each position on the floor.

FunFashionistas: In this class, students will design and create original and wearable art. A variety of non-traditional methods—tying, looping, stapling, and gluing will be used to assemble garments. Students will work “on schedule” towards a runway fashion show at the conclusion of this 2-week course. There is a $25 material fee.

We strive to cover basketball fundamentals and team-oriented play while creating a positive atmosphere where boys and girls will learn and have fun. Chemistry of Cooking
Discover the science of cooking! Our hands-on cooking programs are a fun and engaging way to teach kids an essential life skill, while promoting an appreciation for the art of cooking. Plus the end results are delicious! There is a $25 material fee.

This a full morning class.  “Nature Walk” is a summer camp class for elementary school students that focuses on exploring the great outdoors. During the class, students will take a guided hike through a local nature reserve or park, learning about the plants and animals that call it home. Along the way, they will participate in fun and interactive activities such as bird watching, tree identification, and collecting. The class will also include art projects and a journaling component where students can record their observations and reflections on the natural world around them. The goal of the class is to foster a love and appreciation for nature, as well as to teach students about the importance of conservation and protecting our environment.

Introduction to Coding with MakeCode and Code.org
In this class, students will learn the basics of coding and computer programming, using visual programming languages such as Scratch and MakeCode. With Scratch, you can create your own interactive games, stories, animations — and share them with your friends. Get started by animating your name, creating a holiday card, or making a pong game. They will learn how to create simple programs and animations, and will be introduced to key concepts such as algorithms, loops, and variables. Throughout the week, students will have the opportunity to work on interactive coding projects and challenges, and will learn how to think logically and solve problems. The class will include lessons on how coding is used in everyday life and in different fields like game design, animation, and robotics. This class is perfect for students who are interested in technology and want to learn how to code and create their own interactive projects.

Social Justice
This camp is designed to teach children about important social issues and inspire them to become active members of their community. Throughout the session, campers will learn about different forms of discrimination and inequality, and discuss ways to promote fairness and equality in our society. They will also have the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities and projects that promote social justice and raise awareness about important issues. By the end of the week, campers will have a better understanding of social justice issues and will have the tools and knowledge to become advocates for change in their own communities.

Math Enrichment
Students will brush up on key skills and concepts that carry across the elementary-middle grades, and will help them with feeling confident going into their next school year! Working on essential skills and concepts daily to minimize that classic summer learning loss. This session will provide fun, creative, and engaging activities to assist in student understanding of key concepts that overlap in grades 4-5. In math, the four operations, word problems, fractions, and individualized work take the center focus. Games, songs, and much more will help concepts remain fresh in their minds over the summer, and students will feel more confident going into their upcoming academic year! Our individualized approach helps students reinforce areas that need improvement while sharpening and looking ahead at the next skill to learn. Small class sizes will foster a close relationship between students and teachers.

The Chemistry of Cooking
Discover the science of cooking! Our hands-on cooking programs are a fun and engaging way to teach kids an essential life skill, while promoting an appreciation for the art of cooking. Plus the end results are delicious! There is a $25 material fee. 

Cartoon Animation
Learn how to produce animated cartoons and movies using the same processes as animators at Pixar, Cartoon Network, and Disney do. Create drawings and bring them to life, using production techniques such as timelines and keyframes. Work as part of a team and make friends who share your interests as you explore other animation techniques like claymation and humanimation.

Hogwarts School of Wizardry
Attend a summer term at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry! On the first day, students will be sorted into houses before making their own wands and wizard hats. Students will investigate mysterious powers in the academic areas of Potions, Care of Magical Creatures and Astronomy. Last but not least, each student will be introduced to Quidditch and will play for the Quidditch trophy and the honor of being named the Hogwarts champions. There is a $25 material fee. 

Shark Tank Jr.
Welcome to Shark Tank Jr. Summer Camp! This exciting program is designed for elementary school students who are interested in learning about entrepreneurship and business. Throughout the camp, campers will learn the basics of creating a business plan, pitching their ideas, and working in teams. Each day, campers will participate in interactive activities and simulations that will help them understand the process of starting and running a business. They will also have the opportunity to work on their own business ideas and present them to a panel of “sharks” at the end of the week. In addition to learning about entrepreneurship, campers will also have the opportunity to work on important life skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. By the end of the camp, campers will have a greater understanding of what it takes to be an entrepreneur and will have the opportunity to showcase their business ideas to the community.

Drawing with Ms. Becky
“Drawing with Ms. Becky” is a creative and exciting summer camp class for elementary school students. In this class, students will learn the basics of drawing and illustration, including techniques for creating different textures, perspectives, and lighting effects. They will work with a variety of mediums such as pencils, charcoal, pastels, and paint. The class will be taught by Ms. Becky who is a passionate art teacher who will guide the students through the process of learning different drawing techniques and styles. Throughout the week, students will have the opportunity to experiment with different drawing techniques and media, and will be encouraged to express themselves and develop their own unique style. There will be plenty of opportunities for students to practice their skills, receive feedback and improve their work. This class is perfect for students who love art and want to learn how to draw and create their own masterpieces. There is a $25 material fee. 

I Got Slimed!
Do you have a passion for Slime? Are you ready for a slimy, gooey, and messy adventure? Well join us for Slime Session for a summer you won’t forget! During this week-long camp, you’ll get to experiment with different types of slime and learn how to make your own creations. We’ll explore different textures, colors, and even scents as we mix and mold our own slimy creations. Prepare to get messy, while becoming a slime expert. And remember-not all slime is created equal! There is a $25 material fee.

Cooking and Baking with Ms. Oberg
Get ready to whip up some delicious treats in Ms. Oberg’s Cooking and Baking class! Designed for elementary school students, this summer camp class will introduce young chefs to the joys of cooking and baking. Throughout the week, students will learn about kitchen safety, measuring ingredients, and different cooking techniques. They will also have the opportunity to get hands-on experience with various kitchen tools and appliances, such as mixers and ovens. Each day, Ms. Oberg will lead the class in creating a different recipe, including classic dishes like chocolate chip cookies and pizzas, as well as more advanced creations. Students will learn how to follow recipes, make substitutions, and make adjustments to suit their own tastes. In addition to learning how to cook and bake, students will also learn about nutrition and food science. They will learn how to read labels, understand ingredient lists, and make healthy choices when it comes to cooking and baking. This class is a great opportunity for students to learn new skills, explore their creativity, and have fun in the kitchen. Sign up now to join Ms. Oberg in the kitchen for a week of delicious fun! Printmaking
This summer camp is the perfect opportunity for elementary school students to explore the world of printmaking, an exciting art form that enables the artist to take an image or idea and reproduce it. Students will learn about printmaking techniques, including relief, collagraphs, stenciling, nature printing, and monoprints. They will create editions as well as unique prints in black and white and in color. Students will experience the entire printmaking process, from creating a sketch, transferring the image to a printing plate, inking and testing, to producing the final prints on paper, canvas, and other surfaces. The session will end with creating a collaborative multi-technique large print. Students will learn about the history of printmaking, from bookmaking to reproducing artworks to digital printing. There is a $25 material fee. 

Minecraft Coding
Make chickens rain down on your world, or create a gladiator mini Minecraft game: in this Minecraft Coding class, the possibilities are endless. Review the use of the Minecraft Education edition and learn how to create new Minecraft worlds. MakeCode allows coding with visual blocks, based on a drag and drop interface for beginners, as well as in text with a JavaScript interface for the more experienced learners. Lessons include batch block coding, giving your character superpowers, and coding mini-games.

Theatre Games
Do you have dreams of being on stage? Do you love having fun, playing games, and using your imagination with your friends? Let’s play theater games! In “Theatre Games”, kids are given a space to storytell, sing songs, and create characters while playing games that focus on teamwork, collaboration, and cooperation. Kids will learn to stretch their imagination and enhance their creative thinking skills while building confidence and social skills.

Arts and Crafts: Melty Beads, Jewelry, Cricut Art, and More
For the tinkerers who love to create wonderful objects! Making a bracelet or necklace with simple beads and embroidery floss is the first step, but it doesn’t take long to expand their bead choice to include letters, specialty shape beads, or even a special pendant to use as a centerpiece for the necklace. Or experiment with Melty Beads and create beautiful patterns and art pieces. Get more complex patterns or create a melty beads basket. The creative possibilities are infinite! Or create magic wands or swords using the various tools available in the Thrall Family MakerSpace. Whatever you are building, our instructors are happy to show you new, more challenging techniques. There is a $25 material fee.

Get ready for two weeks of Flag Football and fun! At our Flag Football Camp, we focus on building skills and gaining confidence with basic and advanced techniques. Players also benefit from technical and tactical training with age-appropriate activities such as tactics under the pressure of an opponent and game conditions. We keep it fun and lively!

Students will be challenged each day to use different educational iPad apps and discover various topics. This class is perfect for students who are interested in technology and want to learn how to use the iPad to create and share their ideas. From star gazing to drawing, the fun is limitless!

Get ready to explore your creative side and paint like the famous Bob Ross at our summer camp for elementary school students! During this fun and interactive camp, you’ll learn all about the basics of painting and how to create beautiful landscapes, just like Bob Ross did on his famous TV show. You’ll use a variety of paint colors and techniques to create your own masterpieces. Our experienced instructor will guide you step-by-step and give you plenty of tips and tricks to help you create amazing paintings.
