Camp Classes – For Student Entering Grades 5th to 8th

Choice is an essential ingredient in our approach, which is why we provide a wide variety of classes and programs to choose from. Our innovative offerings include art, STEM, MakerSpace, world languages, academics enrichment, outdoor and urban adventures, cooking, sports, and many more specialty offerings.

Programs reflect our focus on innovative and immersive experiences. Our outstanding team of teachers and counselors help provide an environment where every camper feels free to be themselves, where creativity is allowed to flourish, and where the focus is on friendships and play. Most of all, Summer at MPA is a welcoming place where campers feel known.

Session 1

June 28th to July 9th
Students have a choice of four (4) activities per time block. During registrations, you will be asked to select one per block. Classes are Monday through Friday. Descriptions are below.

Block 1: 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Become a YouTuber: Intro to Adobe Premiere

YouTube is the place to bring your innovative visions to life. Make vlogs, gamecasts, tutorials, and more to establish an online presence and dive into video production. Capture footage with professional equipment and use Adobe Premiere to enhance your project. Learn all the tricks from using green screens to using sound and video effects. Pull your creative endeavors together into a polished channel that’s sure to draw followers.

Spanish Immersion

Our hands-on Spanish Immersion program focuses on conversation and verbal communication with culturally relevant experiences. Campers will be taken into a unique traveling experience around different Hispanic countries where they will embark on a memorable cultural adventure while learning/practicing the Spanish language. Children will explore and learn about geography, society, and arts. The program includes hands-on activities, Spanish class time, dancing and movement, art projects, science projects, and cultural activities.

Dungeons & Dragons: The Quest of the Tower King

Embark on a grand quest to defeat the evil Tower King and free the world from its evil. Whether you watched the Stranger Things kids fight a Demogorgon, are interested in Syfy, magic, board games, or have a bunch of creative friends, this is a great chance to learn to play this iconic fantasy role-playing game.  We provide the Dungeon Master and the dice that will help players learn about character creation,  the nature of magic in the worlds of D&D, the rules for spellcasting, and a selection of typical spells available to magic-using characters (and monsters) in the game. Join us elves, barbarians and wizards on a fun quest to defeat the evil.

Academic Camp: Language Arts Enrichment

Our Language Arts Academic camp covers reading and writing and focuses on reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and written expression. Our individualized approach helps students reinforce areas that need improvements while sharpening and looking ahead at the next skill to learn. Small class size will foster a close relationship between student and teacher. At the end of the session, a written evaluation of each child’s progress will be e-mailed to parents. We strongly encourage families to register for all six weeks of Academic Camp to truly cover all aspects of the curriculum. 

Block 2: 10:05 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Minecraft Modding

If your child enjoys using Minecraft, then have them go to the next level with this fun Modding utilizing various tools such as Blocky and MCreator. In this course, students will be introduced to mods, understand how they work and how they can be installed. Students will modify blocks, items, weapons, biomes, dimensions, and mobs with new textures, models, and attributes. Through this course, students will identify file extensions and move created files into digital game folders. Students will make judgments about reasonable attribute values and carry out a step-by-step process to create Minecraft mods.

Cooking in Spanish!

¡Tengo hambre! For children who love to be in the kitchen, this class will have them cooking foods from many Spanish-speaking regions and enjoy these fabulous dishes! Students will also learn kitchen basics and standard techniques, using a variety of cooking methods to explore various cuisines while reinforcing their Spanish language skills and vocabulary. There is a $25 material cost. 

Pottery Creations

Get ready to get your hands and your clothes dirty!! Pottery classes are a great way to introduce art to your child. Clay is an infinitely versatile medium that allows your child to explore their creativity and expand their skills. In this class, students will become familiar with several clay techniques which will include, but not limited to, Pinch, Coil & Slab, and Mold techniques. Make sure to wear casual clothes that can get a little muddy! There is a $25 additional material cost. 

Academic Camp: Mathematics Enrichment

Mathematics focuses on a new skill each week, building upon the basics for each grade level, including word problems, math games, and skill-building activities. Block 3: 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Advanced Robotics with LEGO MINDSTORM EV3

LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education EV3 and the new EV3  Challenge! Students build robots that can use sensors to find lines, identify threats and targets, and then integrate programming with motors, sounds and other outputs to move, react and solve challenges. Students will work as scientists and engineers as they progress through missions and projects that put their creative problem-solving skills to the test!

Sports Camp: Baseball

The MPA Baseball Camp is a great place for any young baseball player who is looking to improve his/her skills, work hard, make new friends, and have fun. Campers will be placed into age-appropriate groups and will work on all facets of the game including hitting, fielding, base-running, and pitching.  Detailed instruction will be provided in all aspects of the game. The Academy offers players a well-maintained field and two indoor hitting cages.

CPR and First Aid Training

First aid training classes give you the information and the skills you need to help adults and children during many emergency situations. CPR classes offer an opportunity to save lives. The skills you’ll learn during the process can make all the difference to someone in need. This is a great way to introduce students to these concepts and teach them how to react in emergency situations. 

Nature Walks and Urban Farming

It’s time to feed the chicken, explore the greenhouse, and cultivate our garden. Or let’s take a walk and discover nature in our own neighborhood. Campers will learn how to observe closely what they see in nature and write/draw their observations. They will explore the various breeds of chickens, and the differences between them. They will collect their eggs and cook a beautiful meal with their harvest. They will ask questions and learn how to find answers. Students will learn about the amazing monarch butterfly and the necessary conservation efforts required to make sure the beautiful species remains in the hearts of children forever. They will learn how to look for milkweed, find eggs, and raise monarchs safely. Students will learn about the necessary plants monarchs need and plant them! The natural world is an opportunity for children to explore what they love and what they find interesting, so it is important to follow their interests too. 

Block 4: 1:35 p.m. to 3 p.m

Games and Video Games

In MPA’s Games and Video Games Day class, Campers rotate between playing fun age-appropriate video games and playing fun active outside games. Video games include Super Smash Bros, Splatoon, Mario Karts, Super Mario Odyssey, Pokemon Sword, Super Mario Maker 2, and more! Outdoor games include badminton, volleyball, tag, soccer, kickball, and more. The idea is to blend fun cooperative gaming with fun team oriented outdoor games.

The Art of Cooking

Cooking is not only a great skill to have but it is also fun! We believe the best way to teach kids about foods that are good for their mind and bodies is to get them in the kitchen and teach them about good, real food! In this class, our young chefs will get to measure, chop, mix and roll their way to a different delicious dish in each class. There is a $25 additional material cost. 

Melty Beads and Jewelry or Sword Making

For the tinkerers who love to create wonderful objects! Making a bracelet or necklace simple beads and embroidery floss is the first step, but it doesn’t take long to expand their bead choice to include letters, specialty shape beads, or even a special pendant to use as a centerpiece for the necklace. Or experiment with Melty Beads and create beautiful patterns and art pieces. Get more complex patterns or create a melty beads basket. The creative possibilities are infinite!  Or create magic wands or swords using the various tools available in the Thrall Family MakerSpace. Whatever you are building, our instructors are happy to show you new, more challenging techniques.

Session 2

July 12th to July 23rd

Block 1: 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Hardware Coding with Micro:bit

This camp involves using mini-robotics kits designed to develop and improve: Critical thinking, Creativity & Imagination, Engineering skills, and Decision making. We will include coding into the curriculum and several unplugged exercises to strengthen their logical and analytical thinking. The integration of hardware and software will enable kids to visualize better what they code.

French Immersion

Bonjour! Dive into the French language like never before! Through fun and engaging activities, campers will learn and practice their French language skills while learning about the amazing French culture. For beginners and intermediate students, our instructors will instill a love for the French language and culture through hands-on activities. 

Future Leaders

It is said that “a leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way”.  This interactive class will teach our older campers the skills and principals it takes to be an effective leader through a combination of training and experience.  Our young leaders will learn the values of cooperation, compromise, and trust through fun team building activities and games.  Campers will also receive training that will be an asset no matter what path they choose in the future. Campers will also embark on resume writing training and mock interviews, to help them be prepared for any situation.  Our leaders will get the chance to put their training in action, leading activities for younger MPA campers and acting as role models and teachers themselves.  This class will give campers a heightened sense of responsibility, the training necessary to be an asset to any organization or household, and some new friends made along the way.

3D Modeling and Printing

Build a foundation in 3D modeling by designing simple models, then watch them print out right before your very eyes. Create your model from scratch in Autodesk Maya, or import a more intricate design to use as a starting point. As you create your masterpiece, you’ll learn to operate and maintain your 3D printer. The best part? You’ll take home everything you printed out and have the skills and tools to keep going. In this course, you will: complete the entire 3D printing process, use best practices for effective 3D print creation and troubleshooting prints, work in 3D space and design 3D models, and develop visuospatial abilities.

Cooking in French

J’ai faim! For children who love to be in the kitchen, this class will have them cooking foods from many French speaking regions and enjoy these fabulous dishes! Students will also learn kitchen basics and standard techniques, using a variety of cooking methods to explore various cuisines while reinforcing their French language skills and vocabulary. There is a $25 additional material cost. 

Making it Sew Fun!

This class is intended to introduce students to the basics of sewing. Campers will create their own personal accessories. From tote bags, to masks, and aprons, the creative choices are limitless. Students will also learn about elements and principles of design, and the key factors to building and creating their accessory. Students learn how to operate sewing machines, work with different fabrics, use sewing tools and equipment, read and understand sewing patterns, make garments, crafts, home decorating items, and so much more!

Javascript Coding with BB8 and Sphero

Get your robots moving and programmed with this fun and interactive camp. JavaScript is one of the most popular programming languages in the world. Campers will be provided with Sphero robots and the famous BB8 robot and will learn to program them. This hands-on camp is a great introduction to programming 

Sports Camp: Basketball

Want to really excel at basketball?  We have just the basketball camp or program to help you transform your game. We strive to cover basketball fundamentals and team-oriented play while creating a positive atmosphere where boys and girls will learn and have fun. Our skilled coaches work with each athlete to develop the skills of passing, posting, and scoring in the paint, offensive and defensive rebounding, blocking-out, fast-break outlet passing, using screens, and shooting. In addition, players will work on how to get open, footwork, triple-threat position, one-on-one moves, ball-handling, and passing skills. Athletes who attend this camp will leave the camp with a better understanding of the game and the individual requirements of each position on the court.

Chess: Introduction and Strategy

Chess requires skill, not luck, to decide who wins. Learn what it takes to outwit your opponent and the mental concentration needed to outplay someone at chess. In this camp, your child will learn what it takes to become a champion. Open to all levels, campers will learn the basic rules of chess, strategies needed to succeed in the game, and how to play competitively and fairly with their colleagues. Through chess, they’ll gain the ability to solve problems and plan ahead efficiently. We have been working hard incorporating modern technology into our program.  The chess camp will involve digital lessons displayed on a projector.  We will be going over tactics, opening and/or endgame study, and even covering some famous chess games from history.  We will also have some computers set up to give kids an opportunity to learn to play online both against bots and other kids.  

Social Justice: Amplify Your Voice
Campers will learn about social justice in a safe and encouraging space. They will explore topics of diversity, inclusion, equity, and justice and will learn to express themselves, and engage critically with the issues they encounter. Through the exploration of social justice topics, students will analyze topics by gathering and evaluating sources,  develop claims and using evidence, communicate conclusions, and propose actionable solutions. The goal of this class is to amplify the voice of the youth and equip them with the skills to be productive citizens engaged in building community.

Block 4: 1:35 p.m. to 3 p.m

Build a Skate or Penny Board

Get ready to build your own custom skateboard or penny board. Shape your board, decorate it with pyro art, paint, or stickers. Learn how to create a bent tail or keep it rolling flat! Line up your wheels and assemble the grip tape to your liking! Our MakerSpace Woodshop is the perfect place to tinker and experiment with your design. There is a $25 additional material cost. 

Cooking Up the World

Pack your culinary suitcase and get ready to savor the amazing delights of our planet. From tacos to samosas, this culinary trip will take you around the world! Test spices you might have never heard of before. Learn about the connections between food and culture. Share your own family recipe and engage other campers about their favorite cuisine. The class will also teach campers various cooking techniques while incorporating reading, writing, and mathematics. As students tantalize their taste buds and explore various cultures, they will engage in thoughtful discussions to discern the similarities and differences between the people with whom we share the earth. There is a $25 additional material cost.

July 26th to August 6th

Block 1: 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Mobile Game App Design

Ever aspire to join the ranks of mobile game designers? In this game design camp, you will learn to create a mobile video game that will work on your phone or tablet – whether it’s an iPhone, iPad, or Android! After a quick introduction to using the touch screen interface, you will dive into creating games. You will create and edit the game’s code and game logic, create and develop tiles and levels for your game, and have your characters interact with their setting, including behaviors and physics. At the end of the week, you will take home your files on a flash drive, along with your completed games on your phone or tablet.

Mandarin Immersion

Our hands-on Mandarin Immersion program focuses on conversation and verbal communication with culturally relevant experiences. Campers will be taken into a unique traveling experience around China where they will embark on a memorable cultural adventure while learning/practicing Mandarin. Children will explore and learn about geography, society, and arts. The program includes hands-on activities, Mandarin class time, dancing and movement, art projects, science projects, and cultural activities.

Art: Learn from the Masters

Travel the world and learn about the most accomplished masters while fine-tuning your artistic skills. From Picasso to Van Gogh, students will discover the magic of art, its influence, and evolution. We will recreate famous works of art like Van Gogh’s Sunflowers, da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Degas’ ballerinas, and many others all while using a variety of different art materials and techniques.

Cartoon Animation – Imagine and Create Your Own Animated Movie

Learn how to produce animated cartoons and movies using the same processes as animators at Pixar, Cartoon Network, and Disney do. Create drawings and bring them to life, using production techniques such as timelines and keyframes in Toon Boom Harmony™- the same software used to create Spongebob and many more popular cartoons. Work as part of a team and make friends who share your interests as you explore other animation techniques like claymation and “humanimation”.

The Art Lab

From pyro art to clay molding and painting, the Art Lab Camp will allow campers to explore their favorite artistic medium. The environment is stimulating, and relaxed, and ensures that children of all ages and abilities are totally free to express themselves in a wide variety of mediums. Through small group lessons and personalized mentoring, campers will create using various techniques and mediums so that their imagination comes to life!

Minecraft Architecture

Delve into the world of Architecture and learn what it means to think like an architect while you explore the principles of building design. During this course, you’ll learn how to combine different materials, colors, and shapes to create stunning buildings; use floor plans and blueprints to map the interior and exterior of your structures; create your own Minecraft architecture firm to show off your personal flair; design projects based on clients’ needs and make changes until they are happy with your work.

Sports Camp: Flag Football

Get ready for two weeks of Flag Football and fun! At our Flag Football Camp, we focus on building skills and gaining confidence with basic and advanced techniques. Players also benefit from technical and tactical training with age-appropriate activities such as tactics under pressure of an opponent and game conditions. We keep it fun and lively!

The Great American Baking Camp

Got an aspiring baker in the house? One who loves cupcakes, cookies, and muffins? This hands-on baking class will teach your kiddo the ins and outs of baking, with delicious lessons in both sweet and savory goodies. We will focus on a different lesson each week, along with basic baking skills: kitchen safety, knife skills, how to read a recipe, and how to measure ingredients, plus tips and hints that can be applied to any recipe – how to separate an egg, how to whip cream, checking for doneness, piping skills and more. There is a $25 additional material cost. 

Babysitting Certification

Earn your babysitting certification from the American Red Cross. Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve cared for your siblings for years and now want to start earning money or even build a business, our programs can help. By allowing you to demonstrate your skills to the families seeking your help, a Red Cross Advanced child care certification or Babysitting certification shows parents that you take your job seriously.

Designed and taught by experts, Red Cross Babysitting certification course materials are interactive, informative, and fun. Created to help you provide the best care possible, our program can help you deliver compassionate care, and learn to interact with infants and children in fun, age-appropriate ways. This way, you can build a rapport with the children you care for, learn to understand them, and tailor your care to meet the family’s needs.

Science Challenges

In Science Challenge, campers will use the Engineering Design Process to build prototypes as solutions to daily design challenges.  Once briefed with the design challenge, campers will spend their time trying to build a successful solution with the materials that have been provided.  Campers will learn how to ask, imagine, plan, create, and improve their designs as well as learn to work in teams and deal with constraints.  This class is perfect for the budding engineer!
