Camp Classes 2024 – For Student Entering Grades 6th to 8th

Choice is an essential ingredient in our approach, which is why we provide a wide variety of classes and programs to choose from. Our innovative offerings include art, STEM, MakerSpace, world languages, academics enrichment, outdoor and urban adventures, cooking, sports, and many more specialty offerings.

Programs reflect our focus on innovative and immersive experiences. Our outstanding team of teachers and counselors help provide an environment where every camper feels free to be themselves, where creativity is allowed to flourish, and where the focus is on friendships and play. Most of all, Summer at MPA is a welcoming place where campers feel known.

Block 1
8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Students will brush up on key skills and concepts that carry across the middle grades, and will help them with feeling confident going into their next school year! Working on essential skills and concepts daily to minimize that classic summer learning loss. This session will provide fun, creative, and engaging activities to assist in student understanding of key concepts that overlap in grades 5-8. In math, the four operations, word problems, fractions, and individualized work take the center focus. Games, songs, and much more will help concepts remain fresh in their minds over the summer, and students will feel more confident going into their upcoming academic year! Our individualized approach helps students reinforce areas that need improvement while sharpening and looking ahead at the next skill to learn. Small class sizes will foster a close relationship between students and teachers.

Students will develop story ideas with small production teams, practice shooting and editing techniques to create a cohesive narrative, and apply the design thinking process: from iterating on their projects to offering peer critiques. Students will learn the three stages of film production, storytelling techniques, on-camera acting; techniques; Camera/iPad shooting techniques, and editing in iMovie. Students will create: Silent Film; Super Hero Film; Fairy Tale Film; Fable Story. From pre-production storyboarding and scriptwriting to filming, all the way through post-production editing, the students are sure to make great friendships and great films all while sharpening their skills!

This class is designed for creative minds who want to explore the world of podcasting. Whether you’re a budding storyteller, aspiring journalist, or audio enthusiast, this DIY Podcast class is your opportunity to unleash your voice and share your stories with the world. Campers will gain an understanding of podcast production from start to finish. Campers will have the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned through hands-on activities, including script writing exercises, recording sessions, and editing practice. Join us for an unforgettable summer of creativity, collaboration, and podcasting excellence!

Embark on a creative journey into the world of storytelling and visual artistry with our “The Art of Graphic Novels” class. This is class is taught by our Middle School Art teacher. This immersive class is designed for aspiring writers and artists eager to bring their narratives to life through the captivating medium of graphic novels. In this class, the students will delve into the rich history and unique characteristics of graphic novels as a storytelling medium.

Welcome to Graphic Novels summer camp! This academic class is taught by our Middle School English teacher. This exciting camp is designed for students who love to read and create their own comics and graphic novels. During camp, students will have the opportunity to explore the world of graphic novels and comics through reading and analyzing different graphic novels, as well as creating their own comics and graphic novels. Students will learn about the different elements of comics and graphic novels, such as storyboarding, paneling, and character development. They will also learn about the history of comics and graphic novels and how they have evolved over time. Our experienced instructors will guide students through the process of creating their own comics and graphic novels, including developing characters and storylines, drawing and inking, and adding color and text. Students will also have the opportunity to work in small groups to collaborate on comics and graphic novels. Throughout the session, students will also have the opportunity to participate in fun and interactive activities, such as drawing and sketching challenges, comic book trivia, and cosplay workshops. By the end of the session, students will have a completed comic or graphic novel of their own, as well as a deeper understanding of the world of comics and graphic novels. This camp is perfect for students who have a passion for reading and creating comics and graphic novels, and want to develop their skills and knowledge in this exciting field.

In this fun and hands-on summer camp class, students will learn about the basics of engineering and problem-solving as they design, build, and test their own contraptions. Utilizing the Glowforge laser printer, and other materials such as cardboard and paper, campers will work in teams to create structures, machines, and other inventions that can move, spin, or perform other functions. Through this class, students will develop creativity, critical thinking, and teamwork skills while having fun and learning about the exciting world of engineering. There is a $25 material fee.

In “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” players embark on a grand adventure as Link, the hero, tasked with saving the kingdom of Hyrule from the looming threat of Calamity Ganon. The game invites you to explore a vast and open world filled with diverse landscapes, ancient ruins, and mysterious creatures.

As you journey through the expansive kingdom, you’ll encounter various challenges, puzzles, and enemies. The game encourages creativity and strategic thinking, allowing you to approach situations in multiple ways. From climbing mountains to paragliding over vast landscapes, the freedom to explore is a defining feature of the game.

“The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” offers a captivating narrative intertwined with the joy of discovery. Whether you’re scaling towering peaks, delving into ancient shrines, or facing off against powerful foes, every moment is an opportunity for adventure and exploration in this critically acclaimed game. Designed for all skill levels, this summer camp class will introduce young chefs to the joys of cooking. Throughout the week, students will learn about kitchen safety, measuring ingredients, and different cooking techniques. They will also have the opportunity to get hands-on experience with various kitchen tools and appliances. Each day, students will learn how to follow recipes, make substitutions, and make adjustments to suit their own tastes. In addition to learning how to cook, students will also learn about nutrition. They will learn how to read labels, understand ingredient lists, and make healthy choices when it comes to cooking. This class is a great opportunity for students to learn new skills, explore their creativity, and have fun in the kitchen. There is a $25 material fee.

In MPA’s Games and Video Games class, Campers rotate between playing fun age-appropriate video games and playing fun, active games. Video games include Minecraft, Roblox, and more!

Embark on a thrilling journey into the heart of game design with our Video Game Design with Super Mario Maker. This immersive class is designed for enthusiasts of all levels, from beginners to experienced designers, eager to explore the creative possibilities offered by the acclaimed level editor in “Super Mario Maker.” There is a $25 tech fee.

Get ready for two weeks of Flag Football and fun! At our Flag Football Camp, we focus on building skills and gaining confidence with basic and advanced techniques. The title says it all! Come together to play some of old classics and some new board games as well. Enjoy fun camaraderie with your fellow campers. Games include: Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza card game, Taco V Burrito, UNO, Headbandz, Trouble, Mousetrap, Battleship, Chutes and Ladders, Candyland, Bingo, and more! The class will also include lessons on how to play in a fair and competitive manner and how to be a good sport. In addition, students will develop critical thinking, problem-solving and communication skills as they learn to play these games. This class is perfect for students who love games and want to learn and play new games with their peers.

Instill good digital citizenship habits by promoting respectful and responsible behavior within the virtual space. Participants will learn about online etiquette, teamwork, and the importance of a positive gaming community. Experienced instructors will guide participants through the Minecraft universe, offering tips, tricks, and inspiration. Foster a sense of curiosity as children explore different biomes, uncover hidden treasures, and encounter unique challenges

First aid training classes give you the information and the skills you need to help adults and children during many emergency situations. CPR classes offer an opportunity to save lives. The skills you’ll learn during the process can make all the difference to someone in need. This is a great way to introduce students to these concepts and teach them how to react in emergency situations. This class is through the American Red Cross, and students will receive a certification. Parents will receive an email from the Red Cross website, and instructions will be sent to set up your child’s account. 

Get ready to explore the exciting intersection of technology and creativity in our summer class, “AI and Becoming Content Creators!” Tailored for middle school students, this course offers a hands-on, dynamic experience that empowers young minds to harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) as they step into the world of content creation.

Students will explore three-dimensional forms. Using clay, papier-mache, cardboard, found objects, and recycled materials, students will create free-standing sculptures and reliefs on the surface and experiment with assemblages. They will depict figures, animals, fantastic creatures, and abstract structures. Throughout the session, students will also examine the distinct ways of making sculptures artists have explored throughout history and across different cultures. There is a $25 material fee.

Throughout the week, we will delve into a variety of different types of creative stories, from fiction and poetry to plays and screenplays. We will analyze and discuss the elements that make these stories so engaging and effective, and learn how to incorporate these techniques into our own writing. In addition to studying the craft of creative writing, we will also have the opportunity to put our skills to the test by creating our own stories. Our experienced instructor will guide us through the process of generating ideas, developing characters, and crafting compelling plots. We will also learn how to revise and edit our work to make it the best it can be. Don’t miss out on this fun and educational summer camp experience! Welcome to Zombie Science! This summer camp class is designed for students who have a passion for science and a love for all things zombie. In this fun and hands-on class, students will learn biology and perform the scientific method through a variety of engaging activities. From dissecting a sheep’s brain to creating zombie blood, students will learn about the biology of the human body, with a fun zombie twist. There is a $25 material fee.

During this course we will get to know all sorts of materials and methods of making things.  We will learn about electronics, 3D printing, Laser cutting, woodworking and others.  If you are creative and want to make something great, this is the course for you!  Let’s start our journey to become master makers. Campers will engage in a variety of activities and challenges that will help them develop their problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork skills. They will work in small groups to complete a series of challenges that will test their creativity, ingenuity, and perseverance. By the end of the camp, campers will have developed a greater understanding of the many uses of cardboard and the importance of recycling and repurposing materials. They will also have a sense of pride in the projects they have created and the skills they have developed

Want to really excel at basketball? We have just the basketball camp or program to help you transform your game. We strive to cover basketball fundamentals and team-oriented play while creating a positive atmosphere where boys and girls will learn and have fun. Our skilled coaches work with each athlete to develop the skills of passing, posting, and scoring in the paint, offensive and defensive rebounding, blocking-out, fast-break outlet passing, using screens, and shooting. In addition, players will work on how to get open, footwork, triple-threat position, one-on-one moves, ball-handling, and passing skills. Athletes who attend this camp will leave the camp with a better understanding of the game and the individual requirements of each position on the floor.

We strive to cover basketball fundamentals and team-oriented play while creating a positive atmosphere where boys and girls will learn and have fun. Our skilled coaches work with each athlete to develop the skills of passing, posting, and scoring in the paint, offensive and defensive rebounding, blocking-out, fast-break outlet passing, using screens, and shooting. Welcome to Chicago City Adventure, where urban excitement meets summer fun! Join us for two weeks packed with thrilling activities and iconic Chicago landmarks. Explore Millennium Park, cruise along Lake Michigan, discover the wonders of the Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum, and embrace the energy of Navy Pier. Hike and enjoy the Indiana Dunes beaches. Our camp blends cultural experiences, outdoor adventures, and city exploration, providing an unforgettable summer escape right in the heart of Chicago. Let the Windy City be your playground as you create lasting memories with new friends. This camp will depart MPA at 8:35 a.m. each day and be supervised by two MPA teachers. A schedule of activities will be provided prior to the start of camp. The schedule might change according to the weather. Limited to 12 campers.

Join the fabulous and fun Ms. Laura in the kitchen to learn the basics of baking while getting to eat your projects! This class is beginner-friendly and will help students grasp the foundation of how their favorite treats are made so that they can continue to make their own. There is a $25 material fee.

10:05 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

This camp is specially crafted for minds eager to delve into the intricacies of grammar mechanics, empowering them with the tools to express themselves with clarity, precision, and confidence. Let the grammar mastery journey begin!

Escape Room Summer Camp for Middle School students is an exciting and challenging adventure that will take students on a journey of problem-solving and teamwork. Our campers will be placed into teams and given a series of puzzles and riddles to solve in order to escape a themed room. Each day, campers will be presented with a new escape room scenario, each one more challenging than the last. Throughout the week, campers will learn valuable skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. Students will also use technology and be presented with various digital escape rooms. In addition to the escape room challenges, campers will also participate in team-building activities and games that will help them bond and work together more effectively. By the end of the week, campers will have gained confidence in their abilities and a sense of accomplishment as they conquer each escape room challenge.

Learn how to produce animated cartoons and movies using the same processes as animators at Pixar, Cartoon Network, and Disney do. Create drawings and bring them to life, using production techniques such as timelines and keyframes. Work as part of a team and make friends who share your interests as you explore other animation techniques like claymation and humanimation.

In “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” players embark on a grand adventure as Link, the hero, tasked with saving the kingdom of Hyrule from the looming threat of Calamity Ganon. Participants will learn about online etiquette, teamwork, and the importance of a positive gaming community. Experienced instructors will guide participants through the Minecraft universe, offering tips, tricks, and inspiration. Foster a sense of curiosity as children explore different biomes, uncover hidden treasures, and encounter unique challenges

Embark on a gaming adventure like no other with our “Mario Deluxe and Mario Kart Class!” Immerse yourself in the iconic worlds of Mario with two exhilarating titles – “Super Mario Deluxe” and “Mario Kart.” This class offers a thrilling combination of platforming challenges and high-speed kart racing, ensuring a double dose of Mario fun for players of all levels. There is a $25 tech fee.

During this course we will get to know all sorts of materials and methods of making things.  We will learn about electronics, 3D printing, Laser cutting, woodworking and others.  If you are creative and want to make something great, this is the course for you!  Let’s start our journey to become master makers.  There is a $25 material fee.

In MPA’s Games and Video Games class, Campers rotate between playing fun age-appropriate video games and playing fun, active games. Video games include Minecraft, Roblox, and more!
